He was known as the "father of British ornithology". The etchings were published in A Natural History of Uncommon Birds. Plate 102 featured here was listed in the first volume published in 1743. The bird is the Chinese Teal. Edwards notes "I drew this Bird at Richmond in Surry, from the living Bird kept in the Gardens of Sir Mathew Decker". The coloring of the bird is enhanced by French matting on gray. See less
