This lively 1970 portrait bust of the late pacifist priest and poet Father Daniel Berrigan, is by Charles Blaze Vukovich … more This lively 1970 portrait bust of the late pacifist priest and poet Father Daniel Berrigan, is by Charles Blaze Vukovich ( 1917-1986), a well known New Jersey artist. It is made of forged and welded steel rods and strips on a steel armature with welds layered over the strips and rods to give more form to the face. and mounted on a black wood base.
Vukovich graduated from the National Academy of Design, and also studied at the Art Students League in NYC.
In early years he illustrated magazine covers, books, and book jackets, but later he made his living doing large commissioned stained glass windows,steel sculptures, and mosaics for churches around the world, including The Christophers, 12 E. 48th St., NYC, Immaculate Conception Church in Newark, NJ, Covenant House in New York City, Saints Peter and Paul Church in Omaha, Nebraska, and many,many more.
His Public sculptures are in Columbus Park, Hackensack NJ, Boys Club, and Columbus, Ohio..
His sculpture was exhibited in a one-artist show at the Bergen County Museum in 1972. He received a glowing review in The Washingtonian for his stained glass windows in
Dunbarton College (now Howard U. school of Law).
Like many professional artists, who supported themselves by doing commissions, Vukovich also worked in the studio for his own pleasure, to exercise his skills, and expand his technique.
