With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this wonderful antique child's chair. This charming youth's chair is an incredibly rare surviving example of a traditional rocking chair made with love and affection for a younger member of the family. Typically, these chairs served the needs of every child in the home at one point since families had multiple children and as one would outgrow the chair a younger sibling would have need of the specialized size. Families in New England have cherished these chairs and held them dearly for sentimental reasons however most of them have regrettably been lost to time.
The most impressive feature of this chair would be the original fancy paint surface that has remained in exceptional condition. Mustard yellow colored painted accents were applied over the darker surface as to create vibrancy and contrast with lines and motifs decorated in a primitive folk art manner. The frame of the chair consists of three ladderback supports, reinforcing stretcher braces, and twin rocker gliders. The seat is in excellent condition have been rush woven at some point throughout the history of this chair. This specimen is worthy of a small collection that showcases historic New England treasures as it is likely of Vermont origins having been constructed towards the beginning of the 19th century. The piece is in overall excellent condition and would serve well as an accent piece in a collection full of wonderful antiques and primitive items. The chair measures 15 3/4” wide x 21 1/2” deep x 32” tall with an 11 1/2” seat height.
