The preeminent expert on Sèvres in North Carolina has personally looked at this jardiniere and deemed it to be a superior quality piece made in the Sèvres style in the late-19th century (1885-1900), likely in Germany.
Still, the quality of this jardiniere in every facet of production is undeniable, and it's certainly worth every last bit of the $3,500 it would likely cost in a boutique shop.
Here's a proper description of the jardiniere:
- Provenance: I purchased it from a wealthy woman from Dallas, Texas who possessed an extensive private collection of Sèvres and Sèvres-style pieces
- Blue ground porcelain producing the classic Sèvres "Cobalt Blue" color
- Expertly hand-painted scene of a "Disagreeable Courting Couple with Musical Instruments," signed by Hals
- Heavy, intricate and ornate Victorian filigree gilt scroll painting surrounding the cartouche and on featured on the other side of the jardiniere
- Measures 9.5" tall, 15" across from one handle to the other, 15" across on the top of the jardiniere, 7.5" across on the base, and 37" in circumference at its widest point
- Weighs 8 pounds, 15 ounces
- Finely cast ormolu/gilt bronze base, handles, and beaded rim
- As portrayed in picture 2, there is some crazing present in the cartouche, and there is also some discoloration in the cobalt ground in a few spots that is giving the appearance of a rainbow halo effect
- Overglaze blue crossed foliate Ls and crown makers marks on the bottom of the pot
If you have any additional questions, I'll be happy to answer them. This is a museum-quality piece waiting to find its place as a centerpiece in someone's home! less
