Constructed in the late 1950's from a mix of solid and veneered black walnut this incredibly rare and architecturally fascinating book-shelf is ideal for collectors and designers alike searching for an early American Mid-Century Modern piece. Jon Van Koert was a prolific designer of silverware and furniture throughout the post war era. During the course of his life Van Koert was a driving force in bringing Danish Modern and Scandinavian Modern designs to America designing furniture predominately for Drexel, where his designs were presented in the show rooms of department stores such as Macy's and Bloomingdale's throughout the 50's and 60's. Van Koert had a much different philosophy on furniture than most designers of his day, picturing furniture in houses one day being treated like kitchen cabinetry where it would be built-in to the house itself...and one get's that intuition instantly when viewing this alluring bookshelf.

The Drexel Furniture Co. began over a hundred years ago in Hickory, North Carolina with a single product and a simple vision. The product was a made-to-order dining chair. In the decades since, their product range has evolved into an assortment of timeless designs, drawn from significant periods and places, and from the talents of some of the world's most respected designers such as the aforementioned Van Koert. Drexel is still producing pieces to this day with much reverence given to their craftsmanship and use of natural materials.

With it's audacious pyramidal shape, superb old-growth woodgrains and versatility ( able to function as a stand-alone wall unit, book shelf, display or room-divider) this sculptural Étagère can blend seamlessly against a myriad of design backdrops from Mid-Century Modern to BOHO Chic to Contemporary and everything in between.
