charles emile pinson was born on march 9, 1906 in paris and died on april 30, 1963 in saint-jouin in calvados. French engraver, painter and ceramist, he began his artistic training at the age of 18 as a scholarship student in the engraving workshop of the école estienne. In 1925, he entered the école nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in paris. In 1928, he received the blumenthal prize and the prix de rome intaglio for salambô.
from 1930 to 1960, charles-émile pinson was a banknote engraver for the bank of france. At the same time, between 1933 and 1936, he stayed at the villa medici, whose director at the time was paul landowski. In 1936, he obtained an order to decorate the office of the french ambassador to canada, the latter being built by eugène beaudouin. Pinson then chose the theme of the discovery of canada by the vikings in the year 1000 and new france for his work.
in 1939, the artist returned to france while he was mobilized for the second world war. A prisoner of war, he was imprisoned in hohenstein in east prussia, during which he was able to continue his artistic practice. It was during this period that he met other artists such as the painter henry simon. In 1942, charles-émile pinson was repatriated to france while he was ill.
after the liberation of france, the artist notably participated in the reconstruction in caen, but he also worked as an illustrator for les contes de soi by patrice de la tour du pin in 1946 or even for les contes de charles perrault in 1951. In 1959, the artist began his career as a professor at the caen school of fine arts.
