a student of alexandre cabanel, pierre hédouin and jean-paul laurens at the beaux-arts, he exhibited at the salon from 1875. He was a friend of john singer sargent and paul helleu, great painters of the belle epoque who, like him, were great society portraitists.

appreciated by tsar alexander iii, he was invited to russia in 1894 to paint numerous portraits of aristocrats and members of the imperial family.
he decorated with benjamin-constant, henri gervex, albert maignan and olivier merson, the new favart room, destroyed in 1887. He is also the author of the "paris" panel for the large room of the restaurant at the lyon train bleu station.
he taught fine arts from 1905, and became an army painter in 1914.
