A hunter in frock coat and top hat loads a firearm, while hounds flock around him. In the background, a forest of imposing trees with detailed foliage, in subdued light. A pheasant seems to flee, frightened by the presence of the hunters. The second engraving depicts an aristocratic hunting scene. It features an elegant hunter in a blue suit, his horse held by a groom, and two hunting dogs in a neat architectural setting. Both engravings are enhanced by hand and gouache. They are signed lower middle carle vernet (1758-1836), a famous french painter and lithographer specializing in scenes of hunting, cavalry and elegant crews, in a style typical of romantic realism, which emphasized aristocratic traditions and equestrian art.
