Audacious in scope, design and materials utilized this extraordinary Danish-made credenza is as functional as it is visually arresting. Constructed from a mix of solid and matchbook-veneered Burmese teak this striking sideboard is ideal for collectors and designers alike. Featuring three hinged doors, four drawers and six adjustable shelves and replete with exceptional old-growth variegated woodgrains unique to the teak species this versatile piece in many ways represents the zenith of Danish Modern Design.
Svend A. Madsen was a highly influential Danish designer of the Mid-Century and Post War period. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1932 to 1935 and after graduating, he worked for several Danish design companies before founding his own firm, Svend Aage Madsen Design Studio, in 1955. During his career, Madsen designed a wide variety of furniture and lamps, including the Modell 301 chair for Bovenkamp, the Cobra lamp for Louis Poulsen and the Samba chair for Poul Cadovius. He has also worked on industrial design projects for companies such as Bang & Olufsen and Danfoss. Madsen has won several awards for his work, including the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale in 1957 and the Lunning Prize in 1961. His work is considered part of the modern Danish design movement, which emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. Svend Aage Madsen died in 2000, but his work is still admired for its functionality, elegance and timeless simplicity. The sum of it all is captured in the phrase: "Made in Denmark".
The devil is truly in the details in this piece. The left side door features a cleverly placed 4-bottle holder making it a functional petite bar within the credenza. The interior is beautifully finished, even the inner doors are matchbook-veneered. To add extra detail to the design, the legs are pulled slightly under the sideboard to account for skirting, making it possible to place the piece close to the wall. Perhaps the best conditioned vintage Danish sideboard we've ever acquired, this exceptional credenza won't last long. Make it yours today before it's truly gone forever.
