BIO:
William Martin, born in 1953 was raised in Southern California where he began painting oils as a teenager. He apprenticed himself to a local professional artist and within a few months was instructing fellow students in private classes. Martin spent years studying the methods and techniques of the old masters, which is clearly visible in his work. Martin approaches reality in a fashion similar to these old masters by creating still images where the objects and colors are often loaded with symbolic meaning. To achieve this striking effect, Martin employs glazing techniques that originated in the 15th century but which are little used today. This involves the layering of transparent paints over the under-painting. As light travels through the layers of color, the viewer's eye blends the colors, creating an optical illusion of depth, luminosity and richness. The composition of the mediums used by the great artists in the classical era was only known to them, and Martin is just as secretive about his own techniques. The nature of Martin's works ensures collectors a unique and pleasurable piece of art. His art is soothing and pleasing, and owners have found their pleasure in his paintings only grows after time. With prices of traditional art soaring at recent auctions, collectors are clearly rediscovering the timeless value of classical art. Just as these fine works enjoy a renewed and growing interest by the art public, so too, will the work of William Martin continue to appreciate. Martin is represented is several important collections and been the subject of several one-man shows. He is currently represented at select galleries in the west and is currently exclusively shown in Aspen at Aspen Grove Fine Arts. less
