This beautiful table spoon is a must-have for any collector of antique silver pieces. Crafted by B.L. Hood of Albany, NY in the 1860s, it is made of high-quality sterling sterling silver and features an unusual design and motifs. While most early American silver flatware was made in variations of the King's or plain fiddle patterns, this spoon features unusual motifs designed by Hood, possibly based on English or French patterns. The handle has well modeled ram's head and devil's head with tongue sticking out on the handle. The ram's head is modeled on both sides of the handle. Oddly, there are also what appear to be strawberries on both the handle and inside the bowl.
The spoon is 8" long and weighs approximately 52 grams.
Stamped 'PAT. 1862', 'Sterling' & 'B. L. HOOD' on the back of the handle.
3 identical spoons are offered, sold individually. Two are sterling and one is coin. Unless a buyer requests the coin example, the first 2 sold will receive the sterling ones. The condition is very good for the age. None of the spoons have monos. As is usually true with early American spoons, the bowls are bench made and more crudely made than later spoons cast from molds.
Ideal for display or use, this spoon is a great addition to any collection and is sure to be a conversation starter. Its unique design and intricate composition make it a truly special piece that is sure to appreciate for years to come.
