These 6 vintage cocktail glasses were made by renowned Steuben Glass of Corning, New York in the company's elegant modernist air twist design, introduced in 1950 by George Thompson and no longer in production. The pieces are fashioned from Steuben's exceptionally clear crystal and feature thick columnar stems with trapped air which has been formed in a spiral shape. According to company literature, air twist is "A technique unique to glass... requir{ing} very high-quality material for success." As seen in the accompanying photographs, the glasses are a lovely example of Thompson's approach to mid-century modern design.
Steuben Glass Works was founded by Frederick Carder and Thomas Hawkes in 1903 and produced highly sought after art glass until 2011. In early 2014, the company introduced glass made with a new formula, with items being made in Corning and in Europe.
The set of vintage Steuben glasses are in very good vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The glasses stand 3.625" tall, 3.25" wide at the mouth and 2.625" across at the foot. The underside of each glass bears the Steuben diamond point mark.
These distinctive glasses display beautifully and would be a great addition to other Steuben Air Twist glassware or work equally well on their own. A beautiful and useful vintage find!
