This modernist bench was designed by Dutch architect Dom Hans van der Laan. Dom van der Laan was one of the leading figures of the School of Bossche, an architectural movement based on numerical relationships. Dom Hans van der Laan designed the monastery in Vaals in 1960 together with these benches and some other small monastery pieces. Besides the monastery he designed some other pieces but only on request and in very low production. His pieces are similar to designs / ideas from Gerrit Thomas Rietveld and Le Corbusier. This bench was made of a solid galvanized steel frame and pine wooden shelves, connected with 'invisible' connections and finished with visible copper nails. The shelves have a grey stained color and the bench has a patina from usage over the years.
This is the smallest version of this bench. It is 167 cm wide. This smaller version is rare. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
from
misattribution
