This richly colored collagraph is by Gary Lee Shaffer (1936-2001). It is in very good condition. It is editioned in the lower left “A/P” (artist’s proof), titled lower center and signed and dated lower right. This print was exhibited at the Boston Printmakers 37th National Exhibition.

A collagraph print is made by gluing different materials to cardboard and creating a kind of collage. During the inking process, the ink will rub off surfaces that are smooth or higher and stay on surfaces that hold more ink, at edges, and at lower points thus creating the image. The results can be highly textured, richly colored surfaces like this one.

Shaffer trained with Hans Hofmann in the late 1950s and became an influential member of the Printmakers' Workshop in Manhattan. Shaffer moved to San Francisco in the late 1970s. His works are in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Detroit Institute of Arts, among many others. See less
