Unusual antique mahogany extension dining table attributed to Cornelius Briggs Boston, Ma second quarter of the 19th century. Cornelius Briggs had one of the largest cabinet shops in Boston in the second quarter of the 19th century. Briggs is best known for the mechanism he developed which allows the user of these tables to easily close these tables by themselves by use of a windlass system which can be seen under the table. The extension style is referred to as an accordion or concertina action instead of the more common slides we know today. Briggs patented this system in 1843. Briggs died in 1847 and the business was continued until 1854 by his sons when that partnership ended. There is a related Briggs table in the Roswell GLeason Room at the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, MA.
