Silkscreen on vélin papier Ingres de chez Arjomari-Prioux paper. Inscription: signed in the plate and unnumbered, as issued. Good condition. Notes: from the folio, Nous croyons en l'Europe, Etudes pour un projet de timbre, 1979. Published and printed by Éditions Sciaky, Paris, 1979. Excerpted from the folio (translated from French), It was by listening to Mrs. Louise Weiss, at the opening of the Parliament of Europe, that I found some dazzling accents that brought me back to mind drawings. I felt very guilty because the dear great man had been dead since 1963. Having been able to obtain the kind permission of Mr. Edouard Dermit, heir of Jean Cocteau, I no longer hesitated, therefore, to make public these unpublished drawings. I also, through extreme complacency of Mrs. Louise Weiss, obtained the authorization to reproduce, in-depth, her historical text for the inauguration of the European Parliament whose terms had so well reminded me of these drawings of a Jean Cocteau, an ignored European, and proclaiming his faith in Europe. Our edition contains this speech and the famous series of drawings by Jean Cocteau that I had piously preserved for many years. —Mario Sciaky. Éditions Sciaky, hors commerce, all rights reserved, Paris 1979. It was printed on its presses, in silkscreen, DC examples, numbered from I to DC, on papier Ingres de chez Arjomari-Prioux, the boards are in canvas from Texlibris.
JEAN COCTEAU (1889–1963) was a French poet, playwright, novelist, designer, film director, visual artist and critic. He was one of the foremost artists of the surrealist, avant-garde, and Dadaist movements and an influential figure in early 20th century art. The National Observer suggested that, "of the artistic generation whose daring gave birth to Twentieth Century Art, Cocteau came closest to being a Renaissance man."
