With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this exceptional antique chest of drawers. This particular three drawer format is commonly referred to as a bachelor's chest as they are smaller than most conventional antique dressers and made for a younger gentleman without the same storage needs as an older more well to do person. These chests are incredibly rare and desirable as they are the perfect design solution for smaller areas in a traditional interior where the household can benefit from the storage provided by each drawer while not overwhelming the space as a larger antique chest might do. The entire chest is primarily crafted from a premium grade of solid old growth mahogany with brilliant crotched pattern grain book-matched upon each drawer and the elements comprising the front as a whole. A beautiful reddish mahogany color illuminates when the chest is exposed to even a moderate amount of sunlight revealing a warm depth of undertones and brilliance that enhance the exotic mahogany grain.
Along with three primary drawers this chest boasts a single hidden drawer secretly built into the lowest section just beneath the third drawer. This concealed element is referred to as a "slipper drawer" and is one of the most desirable features a chest from this period might possess. Every drawer is dovetailed and fitted with a brass escutcheon and period lock. Beside the drawers are two half column elements which are indicative of the Greco-Roman influence that was prevalent during the American Federal period. The top of the chest and both sides are comprised of finely figured mahogany single plank boards and the piece stands on four expertly turned compressed cannonball type feet. The backboards are entirely original and display centuries of oxidation as to be expected on a true period antique. We note only several small wood losses and repairs which are of no consequence. This chest is in exceptional condition and we could not be prouder to offer it. We have no doubt that a collector with an eye for quality and appreciation for higher end antiques will recognize the full value of this chest and provide it with a wonderful home where it will be cherished. The chest measures 36 1/2" wide x 18 1/8" deep x 30 1/4" tall.
