Do not be fooled, Chissi did not just create a tray shaped like a diamond. He tells a story, which is perfectly dished out. For centuries, Carrara marble was quarried by the sheer strength of men’s labour; the only tools at their disposal were wooden wedges or metallic chisels that were hammered in. Later, in the Eighteenth Century came the use of explosives and, in the Nineteenth Century, the helical wire. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the innovation of the diamond wire made it possible to extract the slab from the mountain.
