With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this wonderful antique tavern table. It is always a privilege to find these rare examples in New England households as we have owned many remarkable examples throughout the years, and we always find that the collectors for these tables are a delight to work with. Tavern tables have always been a key element of American furniture design with the earliest known examples dating to the first half of the 17th century in a period often referred to as "The Pilgrim Century". Examples known to originate in Southeastern Massachusetts have sold publicly for what one might expect to pay for a brand new home, and in a market full of rising and falling prices tavern tables have always proven to be sound investments for those willing to step up to own a piece of early colonial history. In New England most homes throughout the 18th century had at least one tavern table and the form continued to flourish until the later part of the century when larger dropleaf tables became more available to the public.
This tavern table is most likely of New Hampshire origins however could have been made in upper Massachusetts or in a similar setting throughout New England. The table is constructed with both pine and maple which was a typical pairing especially when considering many of these tables were painted or heavily varnished. The original overhung top is in great condition and makes the table worthy of any collection of fine historic antiques. The single drawer features both hand cut dovetail construction as well as a hand chamfered drawer panel with all the oxidation a discerning collection could ever expect to find. The four tapered legs are fashioned in the Hepplewhite manner all of which are maple with some light tiger maple grain figuring. Most impressively the table is constructed with elegant tight pegs that counteract seasonal wood changes ensuring the table remains strongly held together and in good order for the next periods of its considerably long lifetime. Centuries have imbued this table with a depth of character and charm only time can create. A collector wanting a perfect heirloom of historic New England's treasured past for their household would do no better than with an antique such as this exceptional tavern table. The table measures 32 3/4” wide x 20” deep x 26” tall.
