Adriaen van Ostade, one of the most important genre painters of the Dutch Baroque, was born in Haarlem in 1610 as the son of a baker. The family comes from the village of Ostade near Eindhoven. Adriaen van Ostade would spend his entire life in his birthplace, a true art center in this era.
According to Houbraken, Adriaen van Ostade received his training probably around 1627 in the studio of the great Frans Hals, where he possibly studied together with the famous Flemish genre painter Adriaen Brouwer.
In any case, a contact between Adriaen van Ostade and Adriaen Brouwer is very obvious for stylistic reasons: the two young artists establish genre painting in a new style. Like Brouwer, Adriaen van Ostade likes to paint scenes from rough rural life: drinking parties, smoking parties and game evenings in run-down, gloomy bars. Quack doctors and other shady characters also keep Adriaen van Ostade busy. He implements these themes using an artistic technique and occasionally approaches caricature. The subtle colorist Adriaen van Ostade preferred a blue-gray tonality in his works from the 1630s, which was often enlivened with individual color accents. Later, from the 1640s onwards, the palette becomes brighter. The late work of the second half of the century often transplanted the genre scenes from their dim interiors into daylight.
In addition to the peasant genre, Adriaen van Ostade also deals with portraits, landscapes and religious subjects. Technically there is also a lot of diversity: there are small oil paintings on wooden panels, but also pen drawings, watercolors and prints.
Adriaen van Ostade, who first appeared as a master in the Haarlem Painters' Guild in 1634, celebrated great success with his art during his lifetime. Adriaen van Ostade also trains some students, including Cornelis Bega, the younger brother Isaac van Ostade and possibly also Jan Steen.
