This is a gorgeous and sumptiously textured example of crewel embroidery, a traditional form of surface embroidery that uses wool threads on a fabric base, typically linen or cotton. The design consists of intricate floral and botanical motifs, which are characteristic of this art form.
The overall muted palette, staining, coloration and style suggests it could be several decades old, possibly from the 18th–19th century. Historically, crewel-embroidered textiles were often used as decorative wall panels, bed covers or curtains and in some contexts, such embroidered textiles served as bedspreads or curtains for canopied beds. These textiles with detailed floral crewelwork were particularly popular during the Jacobean period (17th century).
This is a large statement piece that someone has carefully stretched over a wood frame for that very purpose. We want this to go to a good home so this could fit in both contemporary or traditional settings...if you have the wall space.
