Cabinet “Chrysanthemums”, urushi-e lacquer, Showa period, 19th century. XX - Japan
Impressive Japanese cabinet in lacquered wood, original from the Shōwa period. The Shōwa era (Japanese: 昭和時代, literally "period of enlightened peace") or Shōwa period is the period in Japanese history corresponding to the reign of Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito), spanning from December 25, 1926 to December 7. January 1989. It was the longest reign of all Japanese emperors. The Showa era was decisive in the cultural aspect, consolidating the Westernization process that had begun in the Meiji and Taisho eras. The Western influence was strong in aesthetics, architecture, gastronomy, literature and other cultural expressions that emerged over the years.
The piece of furniture, which sits on a base with independent legs, has a square front, the bottom of which is smaller. When you open the two doors you will find a shelf inside that separates it into two spaces. Magnetic closure at the top. Chiseled hardware. The entire surface is lacquered, with urushi-e lacquer, golden chrysanthemums are depicted on a black background.
Urushi-e, known in the West as Japanese urushi lacquer, actually emerged far from Japan. It has its origin, like many other Japanese artistic techniques, in the ancient Chinese empire. The birth of this practice dates back to the 7th century AD. Its plasticity and spectacular finishes caused a sensation and its use quickly spread throughout Asia. When the Europeans discovered it, they fell prey to the Asian influence and the orientalist current swept through the most influential courts. After decades of disuse and being relegated to the showcases of decorative arts museums, this ancestral technique returns with renewed strength. Furthermore, the lacquering process is very meticulous, slow and complex, which makes them truly valuable objects.
Ideal as a bar cabinet, auxiliary furniture, or for storage, decorative and functional. It won't go unnoticed!
