Sultanabad is a region in NW Persia. It was the site of the principle Ziegler weaving's in the late 19th century. Sultanabad's are famous for their floral designs as they improved the quality and designs to match the European taste. Adapting the traditional patterns for use in European and American homes. Sultanabad weavers produced highly decorative carpets using the best of materials in their master creations.
Sultanabad carpets were traditionally woven for export, and their design often reflected a blend of traditional Persian motifs with Western influences, especially in the late 19th century when European demand for Persian rugs was at its peak. This resulted in carpets that were somewhat "Westernized" in their aesthetics, with bolder, more accessible designs that were appealing to Western sensibilities while still maintaining the integrity of Persian weaving traditions.
A Sultanabad carpet from 1880 embodies the sophistication and grandeur of Persian culture, as well as the historical trade routes that connected the East and West. Its design, materials, and craftsmanship reflect a confluence of artistic traditions and practical needs, making it a valuable piece of history.
Today, antique Sultanabad carpets from the late 19th century are highly prized by collectors, interior designers, and museums alike. Their rarity, beauty, and historical significance have made them a coveted item in the world of antique textiles. Prices can vary greatly based on the condition, size, and design complexity of the carpet, with particularly well-preserved examples commanding significant amounts on the market.
Owning a Sultanabad carpet is not just about possessing a beautiful and functional object; it is about holding a piece of history that represents the intersection of craftsmanship, culture, and time.
