A compelling work by Valery Konevin, a notable Russian painter born in 1952, “Mapahta 2” painted in 1989 demonstrates the artist’s mastery in merging abstraction with subtle nods to still life. Rendered in oil on canvas, the painting is defined by its intricate interplay of shapes, colors, and textures, offering viewers a multi-dimensional experience.
The composition hints at a still life arrangement while remaining deliberately ambiguous, encouraging personal interpretation. Konevin’s use of bold, sweeping brushstrokes contrasts with more nuanced, delicate details, creating a sense of energy and depth. His refined palette combines vibrant tones with subdued shades, enhancing the work’s rhythm and balance.
This piece exemplifies Konevin’s innovative engagement with modernist ideals, reflecting his unique perspective within the framework of Soviet and post-Soviet artistic traditions. The textured surface and dynamic visual language make “Mapahta 2” a standout example of Konevin’s contribution to contemporary abstraction, appealing to collectors and enthusiasts of Eastern European modern art.

"First of all they are made in Leningrad before my liberation to Israel in January 1990 and are from the most early so called "Russian period" of my development. They were brought to USA in a sea container from Russia to USA while I landed in Israel, Tel Aviv and become an Israeli citizen. The art dealer in USA was Rosetta Pascal who sold these and many other paintings to the most known Jewish collectors. The second dealer was Dov Safrai, the owner of Safrai Gallery Jerusalem (the oldest and important at the time) who sold very many new ones in USA till his death. The point is I have sold about may be around 50 paintings in USA all to Jewish people like advisers, lawyers, Hollywood producer, ...mostly NY, LA, Atlanta." - Valery Konevin (Correspondence with Artist on authenticity).
