A remarkable early to mid eighteenth century German hard paste porcelain coffee pot in fine condition, standing 9 3/4 inches tall with comparable decoration and form to the great Baroque coffee sets. This item dates c1750.
The coffee pot of an elegant pear shaped form with exquisitely molded vines. It is hand painted (cold painted) on the front with a puce bucolic German landscape scene that is amazingly detailed. The scene is painted in the style of Johann Heinrich Eisenträger, a top porcelain painter that worked for the Fürstenberg porcelain factory. The rest of the pot is decorated with flowers.
The spout is molded as a cornucopia with gilt accentuations. The original lid has a yellow flower form finial, punctuated flowers and another landscape scene. The angular reversing scroll handle is also gilded.
The shallow rounded foot is unglazed. The base is glazed. The lid has an unglazed inner mouth. The glaze is bright, shiny and white.
There is mark crossed swords in underglaze cobalt mark on the base. The mark is not very sharp. Although this is similar to the factory mark used by Meissen, it doesn’t exactly match the mark used by Meissen during the mid-18th Century. Because of this we believe the jug was produced by another factory located near Dresden, Germany.
