There is a lower shelf to hold your book(s) and a thin upper lip on the angled top, presumably to do the same. The chair is sturdy but we suggest it would be best used as a decorative piece. Looking at the base, it likely originally had a small kneeling pad attached to it. The chair is 19 inches in width and 21.5 inches in depth with the seat down. If you fold the seat upward, the width of the piece is reduced to 15.5 inches. The seat height is 17.5 inches. There is a maker's mark or label stamped on the underside of the bookshelf. It is so faint we can't make it out or determine if it is in English; see photograph. This piece is in good antique condition with a warn finish and functional seat.
