A gorgeous and very rare pair of fine antique Biedermeier satin birch occasional chairs in lovely condition. Most likely made in Sweden in the latter part of Karl Johan’s reign around 1820, this stunningly impressive pair will be a knockout in any setting. They have a wonderful shape, ornate carvings and mouth-wateringly rich colouring and striated satin grain patterning, making them the perfect pair of impressively sized hallway or occasional chairs, which would enhance even the grandest of interiors.
Impressively sized and reassuringly heavy, they're crafted from solid satin birch wood, which features beautiful wave-like grain patterning and wonderful 200-year-old rich dark and golden honey colouring.
Beautifully crafted, they exhibit the exemplary quality, associated with the finest Biedermeier furniture. They have gorgeous backs featuring characteristically Swedish shapely crest rails above show-stopping and ornately carved back rails, which adjoin the subtly curving back posts / rear legs.
The front legs are beautifully turned and feature particularly standout ball feet in the Swedish Biedermeier fashion. The generously sized satin birch seats and the height of the chairs make this pair even more special. Far bigger than usual hall chairs, they would have been a decorative pair of vestibule or occasional chairs, which even in their time was a rarity for this style and makes them even more-so now.
All in all this is a fantastic, extremely rare and historically significant pair of fine antique Biedermeier Swedish satin birch chairs. Gorgeously toned, beautifully patterned and wonderfully crafted, they are sure to be a sensation in any setting.
CONDITION
These are in very good condition, especially for the 200 year age. Structurally sound, impressively sized and reassuringly heavy, the only minor flaws are the to-be-expected cosmetic signs of wear associated with chairs of their age, including marks and bumps, some cracks to the back rails and some minor historic woodworm marks, for which both chairs have been treated for good measure. Overall they're an incredible pair and if well looked after they should be just as fabulous and pleasing to the eye for many more decades if not centuries to come - please see the photos.
