Pierre d'Avesn for Lorrain & Charles Ranc
A rare French art deco night lamp in blue toned pressed glass made around 1925-1935.
The lamp was made by Lorrain verrerie de belle étoile. Several important Lorrain pieces in moulded-pressed glass were signed d'Avesn. As far as I know this model was produced by Lorrain in clear in blue and in opalescent glass. The glass object was sold to numerous lighting manufactures who made bronze bases for it and sold it in their shops. This one was made by Charles Ranc. The base is done in nickel plated solid brass or bronze and it is stamped with the Ranc foundry mark CR. The glass is signed P'Avesn France.
The lamp is 22 cm (8,66 inches) high. 16 cm (6,3") wide and 10,7 cm (4,2") deep. It is a heavy shade. The total weight of the lamp is 1,75 kilos.
The lamp is in very good condition. The base still has its original nickel plating that shows only minimal signs of wear consistent with age. It is rewired with cloth covered twisted cord. On the pictures it holds its old French bayonet socket. Meanwhile I replaced it for an American candelabra base one and placed a US 2-prong plug.

On Lorrain: In 1926 the famous Daum glass manufacturers opened a new plant in the village of Croismare near Luneville. A year later it started a production of pressed glassware. The new company 'Les Verreries d'Art Lorrain" merged with the one Daum already owned in this village "Les verreries de belle étoile". For these plants the Daum company employed the well known designer Pierre d'Avesn , who till that time worked for René Lalique, as its artistic director. d'Avesn stayed in office till the Lorrain branch closed down in 1934. Some prestigious Lorrain models like this lamp were signed P.d'Avesn. After the bankruptcy of Lorrain d'Avesn became the director of the Hanots/Verlys glass manufactory of the Holophane company.
