These were used in the fireplace when the fireplace was not being used for heat. They are hand painted with illustrations from the Bible on both sides. The top rail is in a form which is reminiscent of an Asian pagoda which shows the influence of the trade between The Netherlands and Asia. This style of painting and the colors used is specific to the town of Hindeloopen. There is shrinkage in the center panel and there is some overall paint loss due to age and use. The two feet have been reinforced with a screw. Other than this, I feel that the piece is in original condition. It measures 36 1/2" high, 21 1/2" wide, and 10: deep at the feet. It is signed on one side with initials BIAS (?) and signed and dated MS 1791 on the reverse side. See less
