Unframed limited edition lithograph on white BFK Rives paper by Vu Cao Dam. Hand-signed and dated by the artist in pencil. Paper Size: 22" x 30", Image Size: 19-1/2" x 25-1/2". Edition size 150. Vu Cao Dam (1908-2000) was born in Hanoi, Vietnam and graduated from the Indochina School of Fine Arts in 1931 with a focus on sculpture. He moved to Paris in 1932 after obtaining a scholarship for further studies in sculpture but later left sculpture for painting, although he remained in France for the rest of his life. In 1949 he moved to the south of France where he became a neighbor of Marc Chagall, who was a great influence on his work. He was also strongly influenced by the French Impressionists, especially Matisse and Bonnard.
There are two stages in his paintings. First silk painting, influenced by old Chinese painting; secondly oil painting influenced by his peers in France. He has worked in the Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam, among other museums, and is one of the most important Vietnamese painters of the 20th century. less
