A vintage 1990s Cassina ''Zig Zag'' chair in cherry wood, marked underneath and numbered (8104), it comes with the original certificate. The chair has only had one previous owner and it's been taken very good care off - there are no watermarks or other damages.
The zig zag is a design icon, very sought after by interior designers and ''De Stijl'' collectors. It's also interesting to know that this chair will only increase in value with years to come. It will once become an antique licenced Rietveld Cassina chair. Cassina obtained the rights to manufacture the Zig Zag in 1973.
The iconic Zig Zag was designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1932. He managed to design a perfectly stable chair which at the time (1930s) must have looked dangerously fragile - a cantilevered seat without any stretchers to support the frame. It had never been done before. Rietveld himself called it ''the little zigzag'' and often referred to it as being an architectural joke. He also called it a ''shot into space'', which may refer to the zigzag shape ending in the line of the backrest straight up into the skies. Or that it is in the shape of a bolt of lightning. Both apply!
It's a very elegant and modest piece, quite small but just big enough and it has such a presence and aesthetic quality looked at from any angle.
The cherry wood has a lovely finish and depth in the woodgrain. It was naturally polished by manufacturer Cassina as is stated in the certificate. This piece has an attribution mark,
