Beautiful french art deco vase in glazed ceramic with gilt bronze mount bearing the mark of the ceramist gustave de bruyn in fives-lille. Antoine gustave de bruyn, known as gustave, (9 december 1838 in louvain, belgium - 11 august 1916 in lille, france) is the founder of the famous faïencerie de fives, an industrial suburb of lille. He began by building his own factory to produce clay pipes and whistles. The business soon expanded to include earthenware and stoneware for everyday use. Artistic pottery and the new successful earthenware were incorporated into the company's catalog in 1887. Soon earthenware became the material of choice for the production of humidors, jardinières, vases and umbrella stands. The company's silver medal at the 1889 paris universal exhibition was a testament to its success. The company soon employed over 300 local people in the production of earthenware, sanitary ware and artistic ceramics. The company's large european export trade in earthenware and artistic ceramics attracted the attention of designers throughout france. Among those who collaborated with ceramics were louis majorelle, the designer of extraordinary art nouveau furniture, and rené lalique, famous for his distinctive jewelery and glassware. It took the start of world war i and a devastating fire in 1917 to end the company's success. Towards the mid-1920s the company returned to production. It enjoyed prosperity with art deco ceramics and ceramic clocks until the early 1930s, when economic and political factors in europe closed the factory. Closed for the duration of world war ii, the ceramics factory reopened after the war. It was sold in 1950 and resumed limited production until 1962, when the company was dissolved.
a look at the company catalog testifies to its success in majolica. The design of their whimsical animal jugs and art nouveau floral-themed ceramics remain their most popular works among collectors. They also made limited palissy-style pottery for collectors of that genre.
