Jo Mair (Itzal) is a sculptor, heavily influenced by organic and geological formations, eroded by wind, sea and the passage of time, and and particularly in the transformative and degradative qualities of these forms. Working primarily with clay, pieces are shaped roughly and intuitively, the parts manipulated and supported without defined expectations of the visual outcome, until the form reveals itself and she is satisfied that its transmit the essence of what beimg communicated.

The material is literally earth itself, harvested from the ground, shaped by water and solidified by fire, embodying the natural elements that sustain life. Its nature mirrors the cycle of life: it can be broken down, reconstituted, and endlessly reused to create and grow again. In contrast to today's culture of fast and reckless consumerism, working with clay is a mindful, deliberate process to create unique, long lasting and sustainable art. See less
