Offered here is a vintage original plotter drawing done in the Op-Art style by Geryl Schonhaut Spiegel. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, at the dawn of the computer age, artists experimented with “digital art.” At that time, a plotter drawing was produced by writing a program on punch cards for a computer attached to a mechanical arm holding a pen or pencil. These machines were capable of executing very fine repetitive lines in any pattern a programmer could write. Fascinating. This original is in its original vintage frame 13 × 13 inches.
Op-Art (Optical Art) was extremely popular in the late 1960s through the 1970s. In 1965 the Museum of Modern Art had a landmark exhibit of Op-Art paintings and graphics called “The Responsive Eye.” I remember seeing Op-Art products sold at Macy’s in NYC. The most well-known artists are Victor Vasarely, Bridget Riley, Richard Anuszkiewicz.
