Item :
Wonderful soft ceramic sculpture hand-decorated with airbrush, depicting a little girl sitting with flowers. Dated and signed under the base with one of the very first marks of the Viennese manufacture of Wiener Keramik, by Michael Powolny, and the precise date of creation of the sculpture, 13 October 1912. The presence of the date written in full makes us think that it is of a unique piece made by Michael Powolny himself. The dark colors of the bouquet of flowers, with clear divisions, are reminiscent of expressionism, and are in stark contrast to the pale white of the little girl's dress. The evanescence of the sculpture is particularly valuable, notice how the features of the face, the folds of the overlapping flounced skirt, or the contours of the feet, flowers and hands are barely hinted at, yet the smiling expression of the little girl can be clearly seen, very difficult to be rendered with such a tenuous and evanescent definition of details.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
Michael Powolny's ceramics are sold and auctioned at exorbitant prices as, you can see in the last photo where we have put some of the highest results achieved by his works found online, and consider that the hammer prices must then be added to the auction fees of 25-30%. Note the similarity with the proposed sculpture although smaller, we are faced with an extremely rare ceramic, in our opinion a unique piece or in any case with a very limited edition.
Information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
The Wiener Keramik was founded in 1906 by Michael Powolny, one of the greatest artists, ceramists and designers of the European scene of the early 1900s, and just a year later, in 1907 it was absorbed by the Wiener Werkstatte, founded in 1903 by the architect Josef Hoffmann and the painter Koloman Moser, who aimed to bring together all the styles of that era, from Viennese secessionism to English Liberty, from Art Noveau to Jagenstill and Arts and Crafts. All the greatest European artists worked for this important factory in the first decades of the 1900s, including obviously Michael Powolny himself. This piece has an attribution mark,
I am sure that it is completely authentic and take full responsibility for any authenticity
