Originally, they were an all wood rectangular panel with decorative elements inset above a fireplace. As glass became more available, it was incorporated into the bottom of a panel, so a candle could be set in front of it to reflect light in dimly lit rooms. This sketch-like oil on canvas is unusual for a trumeau painting, most are more formal, fully developed paintings reflected of this time. The mirror is lightly oxidized and all is framed in a simple gilt frame with beading on the inside edge. less
