With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this incredible antique dining table. This table is among the finest and most unique examples which we have ever been able to find throughout half a century of collecting antiques. We fell in love with this table the first moment we saw it with the obvious beauty of the three impressive single plank boards that comprise the entire top and both leaves. When we first attempted to move it we were surprised with just how heavy it is weighting perhaps three times more than what an ordinary table of the same form typically weighs. The enhanced density belonging to the table is due to the rich natural conditions in which the original lumber was first harvested. Timber from remote areas of Central and South America can sometimes become mineral dense as the climate allows the old growth tree to prosper over centuries of undisturbed growth. There is nothing in the world today available to the public which compares to the lumber used to construct this table centuries ago. The value of all three boards which comprise the top and leaves are far more valuable from a material standpoint than what the entire table is being offered for. With a light oil based polish and some natural sunlight exposure the top of the table illuminates with a depth of character which we have yet to ever see before.
We attribute the table to having been constructed somewhere close to Coastal New Hampshire during the last quarter of the 18th century. There are six finely formed rope turned legs which support the entire table as a whole. Two of the legs function as "gatelegs" with the ability to swing outwards 90 degrees to support the dropleaf ends when the owner wishes to expand the surface area of the table. The rope turned elements are indicative of furniture made in communities situated by the coast as the rope design was generally designated for patrons engaged in the merchant marine trade or who otherwise made their fortune out at sea. Coastal areas also benefitted from the close access to timber importation with the finest exotic woods arriving by ship to the docks of these communities and the cabinetmakers of those areas getting exclusive access to their cargo. This table is a museum grade example of a federal era table made in the Sheraton manner with finely turned legs that end on ball feet. With both leaves fully opened the table expands 63 1/4" wide. The table measures 47" long x 20 3/4" wide with the leaves down and stands 28 3/4" tall. less
