Orientalist painting, oil on canvas , depicting an Egyptian landscape with Arab praying with camel and pyramids in the background. … Read more Orientalist painting, oil on canvas , depicting an Egyptian landscape with Arab praying with camel and pyramids in the background. Signed by the artist Eugène Alexis Girardet in the lower right corner, an important French painter famous for his Orientalist paintings. Of particular note is the artist's skill in rendering the strong brightness of the Egyptian sun, which is especially visible on the nearest pyramid and on the ground where the Arab is praying. The painting can be dated to the late 19th century, and the excellent patina, especially on the back, confirms our dating.

Information on artist and/or manufacture:
Eugène Alexis Girardet ( 1853 - 1907) was a Swiss-born French Orientalist painter. In 1898, he visited Egypt and Palestine, producing many works depicting the lives of desert nomads. Unlike other Orientalists, he never produced harem scenes. Upon returning to France, he became a teacher at the Académie Julian . He exhibited regularly at the Salon and with the Société des Peintres Orientalistes Français (of which he was one of the founding members), with major shows at the Exposition Universelle (1900) , where he won a gold medal, and at the Exposition Coloniale de Marseille in 1906. He also exhibited at the Glaspalast in Monaco. He was buried at the Père-Lachaise Cemetery . In addition to several museums in France, his works can be seen at the Dahesh Museum of Art and the National Museum of Fine Arts in Algiers , as well as museums in Switzerland and New York City.
