aldo mazza (milan, 6 july 1880 – gavirate, 26 july 1964) was an italian painter, advertiser and illustrator.
he was the son of adelio, an accountant and dialect poet, and nephew of the romantic school painter giuseppe mazza (1817-1884), who had had francesco hayez as his teacher.
aldo mazza grew up in an atmosphere marked by art and patriotism - his father and uncle had participated in the defense of milan against the austrians of marshal josef radetzky.
at the brera academy he had cesare tallone as his teacher
he received his first assignment as an author of satirical cartoons from "guerin meschino", he also drew for "il numero", for "l'illustrazione italiana", for "il secolo" (from 1924) and for "il pasquino".
he was linked to the group of caricaturists of the "frigidarium". He participated in the "great italian exhibition of caricature and humour" in 1914, organized by the newspaper "il numero".
in 1983, the exhibition political satire in the drawings of aldo mazza was set up in milan.
he worked as a poster designer above all for the bolognese company chappuis, for the bertarelli graphic arts and for ricordi, creating around sixty posters, including advertising and political ones; he also designed theater posters and calendars.
he designed a shell advertising campaign on postcards and during the great war he created postcards for the national loan. A large group of his posters, created during the great war, are in rome, at the library of modern and contemporary history and at the central municipal library of milan.
aldo mazza presented a portrait of his wife at the 1911 turin exhibition.
his painting del vespero, influenced by divisionism, was exhibited at the 1906 venice biennale.
