"The Covered Wagon" On the Oregon Trail Prairie Schooner and Cattle
Facsimile in oil or silk screen Oil print by Gilbert Ross Tonge (American, 1883 - 1970) circa 1940. Titled "The Covered Wagon and "A replica hand-crafted in genuine oil colors from the original painting. Examples are not plentiful and last a lifetime like the original oil paintings.

In a period craftsman style frame
Born in San Francisco, CA on June 12, 1883. Tonge was a member of a pioneer California family; his father had been a judge in Hangtown. The younger Tonge studied art locally at the Mark Hopkins Institute. During the 1920s and 1930s he was a resident of Los Angeles. His landscapes include the redwood forests; however, he is best known as a muralist. His murals are in many hotels, restaurants, and clubs in Los Angeles and San Diego. Most of the latter part of his life was spent in Sausalito, CA where he was an ardent sailor. Tonge died in Santa Cruz, CA on March 25, 1970. Exh: Painters & Sculptors of LA, 1926; Calif. Art Club.
