Artist Biography
Joseph David Greenbaum (1864 - 1940) was active/lived in California / Germany. He is known for Portrait, landscape and animal painting.Born in New York City and a long-time resident of California, Joseph Greenbaum became a portrait painter of prominent persons and landscape subjects .When he was age 13, he moved to San Francisco where he studied at the School of Design. He then studied in Munich, Germany at the Royal Academy of Fine Art with Carl von Marr, and in Paris at the Academie Julian with Jules Lefebvre, Robert Fleury, and H Zugel, famous animal painter. Returning to San Francisco, Greenbaum estabished a career as a portrait painter of prominent persons, and also painted images of the Chinese fisher folk in Monterey. His studio was at 916 Market Street. He made a second trip to Paris, where he studied for four years and then moved to Los Angeles because his San Francisco studio was destroyed in the earthquake and fire of 1906. He resumed portrait painting of notables, setting up a studio in the Blanchard Building, and from 1908 taught at the Art Students League of Los Angeles. Among his future well-known students were Rex Slinkard and Stanton Macdonald-Wright.Between 1908 and the 1930, he made numerous desert landscape painting trips into New Mexico and Arizona, but he continued to live in Los Angeles until his death in 1940.Exhibition venues included the Royal Academy of Fine Art; California State Fair, 1889, 1899; Paris Salon, 1896; San Francisco Art Association, 1896-1910; Blanchard Hall (LA), 1906-08; Steckel Gallery (LA), 1907; Del Monte Art Gallery, 1907-12; Alaska-Yukon Expo (Seattle), 1909 (gold medal); Golden Gate Park Museum, 1915; Kanst Gallery (LA), 1915; and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1915. Collections include: Santa Cruz City Museum; De Young Museum; Irvine (CA) Museum; Mechanics' Institute, San Francisco; and California Historical Society. less
