With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this wonderful antique coat tree. In nearly every household in America there once was an elegant coat tree to greet anyone entering or leaving the home. Overtime many were discarded as the interiors of homes changed and demand decreased in favor of cheap modern day wall hooks. It was once customary for a gentleman or lady to remove their coat and hat as good manners dictated as soon as they walked through the front door. For anyone looking to add an element of charm and sophistication to the entryway of their home this coat tree is the perfect solution. This example is among the best ever produced in this country with masterful carving work generally reserved for the most important furniture made during the American Classical design movement.
This coat tree was produced by the Berkey and Gay furniture company of Boston, MA about a century ago. At this time, they would have had access to a class of highly skilled furniture carvers competing for work in a rapidly changing city. The central vertical element of the coat tree is the work of a master furniture carver who designed this piece with spiraling acanthus leaf carvings in lavish detail. Every aspect of the carving work is impeccable and along with the four articulated hairy paw carved feet make this coat tree one of the finest ever produced during this period. There are four curved brass coat hooks which are expertly crafted along with a turned knob element placed atop the coat tree. At the widest point of the base the piece measures 20" wide and the opposing side measures 13 1/2" long. Overall the coat tree stands 68 3/4" tall. less
