Pastel on oval parchment depicting a veiled girl, 18th century, with original gilded wooden frame. On the back we read the signature J\.\. Meyer followed by numbers, which do not coincide with dates but presumably with collection inventories.
Meyer was a portraitist of German origins and naturalized English. A pupil of the German painter Christian Friedrich Zincke in London, he specialized in portraiture and miniature, portraying noblemen, ladies and children belonging to the English nobility. His female portraits were executed by him with soft, delicate and velvety tones.
The pastel comes from the collection of an important Florentine family. Traces of humidity at the bottom which caused a waviness in the parchment.
