This is a beautiful, museum quality, hand-carved, Chinese Qing Dynasty traditional JuMu rosewood six-post canopy bed. Designed for use as both a bed for sleeping and a couch for socializing, the amply proportioned, rail-wrapped, woven rattan-covered platform will hold sleeping quilts, cushions and pillows, and the soaring, lattice-covered canopy frame can be dressed in curtains for privacy.
Supported by four massive cabriole legs, the bed’s platform in turn supports six square section posts, joined top and bottom by exquisitely carved transoms and railings whose endlessly repeating, openwork lotus motif surrounds the occupant with symbols of beauty, purity and rebirth. Atop the frame formed by section posts and transoms sits the bed’s latticed roof, whose beams are joined in the shape of the Chinese character meaning “be happy”.
The bed comes in pieces connected without glue or screws by matching mortise-and-tenon joinery, a classic design intended to facilitate easy assembly and disassembly and convenient transportation and storage.
Fits a queen-sized mattress.
