Offered is possibly the most fun modern art exhibition catalog we've ever encountered. Full to the brim of images and text of all the big dogs of 20th Century art, including fold out pages, and an excellent mix of high and low art favorites. The authors are also the directors of the eponymous exhibition held at The Museum of Modern Art, October 1990 - February 1991, The Art Institute of Chicago, February 1991 - May 1991, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, June 1991 - September 1991. If you missed the exhibition, and can't afford the art, this book is a treat you deserve. We've sampled as many of the images as we could fit for you - hope you enjoy the teaser.

Title: High & Low: Modern Art Popular Culture Varnedoe, Kirk,Gopnik, Adam
Publisher: Harry N Abrams Inc
Publication Date: 1990
Binding: paperback
ISBN 10: 0810961180 / ISBN 13: 9780810961180
From Publishers Weekly:
Narrower in scope than its title suggests, this sprawling, visually riveting catalogue of a traveling exhibition traces the "dialogue" between "high" art (Picasso, Miro, Seurat, etc.) and the streetwise or commercial "low" media of graffiti, caricature, comics and advertising. Picasso transformed sly notebook caricatures into the "high" paintings of his primitive/archaic phase. Claes Oldenburg turned a lipstick tube into a colossal, totemic monument. From cubist newspaper collages to Jenny Holzer's electric-message installations, popular culture has served such modern artists as Jeff Koons, Joseph Cornell and Cy Twombly as a means of recovery of certain high-art traditions. Although the text may be swollen with hype, artspeak and farfetched comparisons, this tome entertains as it informs. Varnedoe is director of paintings and sculpture at New York's Museum of Modern Art; Gopnik is a New Yorker staff writer. less
