Kiki Smith (American, b. 1954) Virgin Mary Print
Screenprint on handmade Nepalese paper, 1992, with rubber stamp printed in red and black, from the edition of 3000, printed by the artist, sheet bears the inkstamp of the publisher, Österreichisches Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Vienna, with full margins, framed under glass. Kiki Smith is a contemporary American artist known for her figural representations of mortality, abjection, and sexuality. “I always think the whole history of the world is in your body,” Smith has said. The artist has used drawing, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, and photography to express themes related to her perspectives on the human condition. Smith was born in Nuremberg, Germany and moved to New Jersey with her father, sculptor Tony Smith and mother, singer Jane Lawrence. Mostly self-taught, Smith attended the Hartford Art School for briefly before moving to New York in 1976 where she joined the Downtown arts scene of the time which included artists like David Hammons and Jenny Holzer. Smith’s works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
