About Kilims
Balkan to Pakistani kilims are flat tapestry-woven carpets. Kilims can be prayer rugs or decor. Modern kilims are popular Western floor coverings.
Weaving Method
KILIMs are flat, pile-free weaves formed by closely interlacing warp and weft threads. Kilim weft-faced plain weaves hide vertical warp strands by drawing horizontal weft strands down.
Recoiled weft yarn from color boundaries. On fields with straight vertical borders, a vertical split develops between the two colors.
The majority of kilims are "slit woven". Slits provide sharp-etched designs that showcase weave geometry, which collectors love. Interlocking weaving prevent slits, blurring pattern images.
Hand-woven Afghan carpets (Kilims) cover floors.
Afghan immigrants in Pakistan weave carpets. Hamburg's 2008, 2013, and 2014 international awards went to Afghan rug.
Turkmen and other ethnicities create Afghan carpets in northern and western Afghanistan.
Western Afghanistan's Herat Province produces one of the most unique oriental carpets, the Shindand or Adraskan (named after local Afghan cities).
Their signature style is weirdly stretched animals and humans. Afghanistan sells rugs and kilims, primarily in Mazar-e Sharif.
Afghanistan also loves Baluchi prayer mats. Southwest Afghanistan's Baloch create them.
Vegetable and natural dyes produce rich colors. Medium-sized carpets are usual.
The octagonal elephant's foot (Bukhara) print on red is the most prevalent. Nomads weave tent bags and ceremonial objects less
