Wonderful cloisonné enamelled box, made in the 20th century in China. It has a simple structure, rectangular profile and slightly domed lid; and is raised slightly from the ground by small legs. The box is made of metal inlaid with brightly colored vitreous enamel. The lapis lazuli blue background is a characteristic shade of Chinese cloisonné pieces, especially from the Qing period and later. It also presents stylized leaves and flowers, inspired by nature and important in Chinese culture, such as the lotus flower or peonies, which symbolize purity and wealth. Among this ornament, the figure of a butterfly stands out, which could symbolize love, longevity or transformation. This box is from the mid-20th century, inspired by the oldest Chinese cloisonné tradition.
The cloisonné enamelling technique has its origins in the 12th century BC. C., but it is during the Byzantine era that it acquires greater development.
