Description: Tableware set, probably designed specifically to serve fish, but which, in my opinion, should not be used strictly for this … more Tableware set, probably designed specifically to serve fish, but which, in my opinion, should not be used strictly for this purpose but can also have a very appropriate exclusively decorative function. When I bought them, I imagined those six multicolored fish on a wall as a small school even before on a table. The set is composed of 6 plates in the shape of an imaginary species of fish, although the embossed texture of the scales makes them very realistic. Almost certainly made in Italy between the 50s and 60s, probably in the Nove area (known for its ceramic production), this vintage tableware set is made of ironstone glazed ceramic; the embossed workmanship of the fins and scales of the fish is splendid, but above all the chromatic contrast between the dark, sage green and the bright, albeit pastel pink. The design of these fish seems to have come out of an ancient fairy tale book, or from an 18th century engraving depicting disturbing sea monsters. Typical of Portuguese ceramics such as Bordallo Pinheiro, the tableware that reproduces in majolica the forms of Nature such as fruit, vegetables or animals has been very popular also in Italy. Without obvious defects this set is in good vintage condition. It shows minimal signs of use and time. less
