With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this exceptional and rare antique serving cabinet. This example dates to the first quarter of the 19th century during the second half of the American Federal period when the classical design movement became the prevalent style in the country. This serving cabinet is intended to accompany a late Federal / early Classical period dining room sideboard. These sideboards are typically five or six feet in length and command their own wall in the dining room. These serving cabinets are intended to be placed on an opposing or adjacent wall in the dining room for the purpose of having additional storage and serving space. Cabinets of this variety are incredibly rare and were generally only owned by considerably wealthy patrons. We estimate that for every 10-15 antique sideboards available throughout the antiques industry there may only be one of these cabinets to pair with them. This approximation is based on decades of collecting with a focus on furnishing early American interiors.
This serving cabinet is constructed from solid mahogany with boldly figured crotched mahogany grain selected for the curved drawer and door. Two full columns are situated on either side of the cabinet door which feature finely carved capitols and well-turned posts. The front of the cabinet has two exceptionally carved classical lion paw feet crafted with excellent detail. The cabinet door opens to reveal a single fixed storage shelf. Two centuries of oxidation are apparent throughout the interior of the cabinet along with the backboards. While these cabinets are considerably useful in a dining room interior, we have had clients choose to use these for bedside tables or for cabinet storage in living rooms and hallways. Antique cabinets from any period that purport to this size are incredibly useful and desirable for collectors searching for the perfect piece for any room of their home. less
